Lately, we've been featuring leaders who run remote teams, and function almost entirely on async collaboration. As much as we're async advocates, there's always a time and place for synchronous communication. There are multiple ways to manage a remote team successfully, and what's key is figuring out what works best for your team based on the needs of your employees and the company as a whole. In our interview with Catherine Mattice, Founder of Civility Partners, she shares how she leads her team successfully using synchronous collaboration as their backbone. Although async communication is used in their day-to-day to manage documents that need to be reviewed or email conversations with clients, the majority of their collaboration is synchronous.

Explain a little about your role as an Instructor with LinkedIn Learning and what a typical workday looks like for you.

I love being a LinkedIn Learning instructor. I am so passionate about what I do, and they provide me a platform to share tips for changing the workplace and thus the world! A typical workday includes coming into the office and logging into zoom, where my team hangs out all day. We found that we can stay connected and emulate the office space to have an open room for people to come and go. We have banter and water cooler talk throughout the day.

Then I check my calendar to see what I have going on for the day, and then I get to work. I am a culture consultant, coach, and trainer with a team of 4 at Civility Partners, so my day changes constantly. I might be on a sales call, then delivering a webinar or training, then working on a client's climate assessment report, and then heading off to a zoom networking event, and then on to a coaching session. Somewhere in there I also check emails and try to ensure my staff has what they need to get their work done. It's a packed day every single day.

Describe the layout and feel of your personal workspace.

With my team going remote and my office building lease-up, I moved into a small warehouse-feeling space behind a used bookstore. It's the perfect executive suite size, and the walls were already painted a dark rich gray color so I decided to decorate around that. At home, everything is kid-friendly and more modern farmhouse style so I went a little crazy creating an eclectic space that's mine and mine alone. I have a variety of quotes and weird art in gold ornate frames on one wall, a giant ornate gold mirror hanging on the cement block wall, a giant cartoonish painting behind me that everyone on zoom compliments, a cabinet I got for free and painted mint green, a purple couch right next to it, and a shudder I also got for free and painted bright pink to use as a shelf - it holds many quotes in ornate gold frames. I love my space, it makes me happy.

What's one habit or ritual you need to start and finish your day and why is it non-negotiable for you?

In the morning I need coffee. I am not able (allowed?) to interact with others until I've had coffee and my body has turned on.

Is there one particular podcast or youtube channel that you can't stop listening to or watching?

Not necessarily. I read a lot of personal development books though.

If you could be doing anything else than what you're doing, what would it be?

I love what I do. Absolutely nothing else would be as fulfilling as growing a business focused on creating respect and dignity at work.
